This fundraising initiative helps us continue to bring positive role models into the lives of disadvantaged youth in our community. In 2009, 160 local children and youth reached out to Big Brothers Big Sisters to ask for a mentor. With more than 41 years of experience, we know that kids need help to build confidence and self-esteem, to be engaged in learning, and to be introduced to ideas, activities, skills and tools that will help them succeed in school, at home and in our community.

We want to expand our services in this community and deliver our In-School Mentoring programming in the Harewood neighborhood. The children and youth in that neighborhood are the kids that are in need of your community investment dollars. The Harewood In-School Mentoring expansion would engage teens from John Barsby Community School as mentors for children at Georgia Avenue Elementary. These Teen Mentors will develop their problem-solving, listening and communication skills while helping their “Little” improve their self-esteem and self worth and provide them with support, advice, friendship, reinforcement and constructive role modeling.

All proceeds raised from this event are used to develop and maintain our mentoring programs. Please support the work that we do. Help us to  positively affect our community by providing mentoring programs for children and youth, which enhance their sense of belonging, self-worth, resiliency and capacity to make healthy, well-informed choices.
